I discovered a new type of music night by traveling in the US. While karaoke is very famous in Italy, I had never heard about the concept of open mic night. So I decided to interview a Philadelphia singer to find out more about it.
Breaking airwaves with her sweet voice
During my journey, I met Shiena, a songwriter and vocalist based in Philadelphia (PA, U.S.A.), who showed me the ropes of the music world in this city. I followed her smooth harmonies and jazzy R&B tune to Time and Silk City, two local Philadelphia restaurants.
Her breathtaking sinuosity and tuneful voice introduced me to Jazz, a genre that changed the world in the twenties and even today is still able to heal the soul.
Get the mic and be professional
You should have done your homework before joining an open mic night. According to Shiena, open mic is for experienced singers that are able to sing with a live band and entertain the audience.
This is the critical difference between open mic night and karaoke. No lyrics, no support. You have only your voice and the rhythm.
Once you get into a restaurant or bar that is hosting an open mic night, you sign your name on a list, wait your turn and then sing with a live band in front of a hungry crowd that expects you to rock’n’roll your performance. But remember to agree with the band the song you want to play before you start.
WHAT DO YOU THINK
Is it common in your country this kind of night entertainment?
