A night of music in Philadelphia: between open mic and karaoke with the singer Shiena

Updated: Sep 27, 2018

I discovered a new type of music night by traveling in the US. While karaoke is very famous in Italy, I had never heard about the concept of open mic night. So I decided to interview a Philadelphia singer to find out more about it.

Breaking airwaves with her sweet voice

During my journey, I met Shiena, a songwriter and vocalist based in Philadelphia (PA, U.S.A.), who showed me the ropes of the music world in this city. I followed her smooth harmonies and jazzy R&B tune to Time and Silk City, two local Philadelphia restaurants.

Her breathtaking sinuosity and tuneful voice introduced me to Jazz, a genre that changed the world in the twenties and even today is still able to heal the soul.

A black professional singer and vocalist Shiena Sneed is singing live at Silk City in Philadelphia (PA, USA). Shiena also is a songwriter and is breaking the airwaves unapologetically with her sweet, yet sexy tone in her debut single "I'll wait for you". Shiena has worked with some of the industry's top musical directors and producers. She is a greatly respected, highly admired singer/songwriter and her new single is proof of why people love her so much. Her lyrics and smooth harmonies in this jazzy R&B tune are definitely what radio and your favorite playlist have been missing. 􏰀􏰀Shiena initially debuted as a solo artist at the Long Beach Jazz Festival in 2012. Shortly after, she left Los Angeles and became a Philadelphia resident; knowing Philly, a city historic for epic musicians and timeless creativity, would be the place to hone her for destined greatness. Shiena is taking center stage with Agape Love as her muse! Using her pure heart as an ever ready pen, her soothing vocals and a captivating look that's effortlessly flawless, Shiena looks forward to releasing the full length musical art Loves Vulnerable.

Get the mic and be professional

You should have done your homework before joining an open mic night. According to Shiena, open mic is for experienced singers that are able to sing with a live band and entertain the audience.

This is the critical difference between open mic night and karaoke. No lyrics, no support. You have only your voice and the rhythm.

Once you get into a restaurant or bar that is hosting an open mic night, you sign your name on a list, wait your turn and then sing with a live band in front of a hungry crowd that expects you to rock’n’roll your performance. But remember to agree with the band the song you want to play before you start.

WHAT DO YOU THINK

Is it common in your country this kind of night entertainment?
