This time, I visited Focused Athletics, a non-profit organization which helps Philadelphia inner city students participate in sports, study and stay away from trouble. I took part in a boxing lesson led by its founder, Jackson Duncan, who explained the basic combo of this discipline.
Easy punches that can hurt
One, two, three, one, two, three: these are the numbers you will hear ad nauseam for many months when you approach boxing. They indicate three different types of punches that are the jab, cross and hook.
Even if this combo represents the basics in this discipline, you don’t have to underestimate its power. This combination, if hurled with the appropriate technique, can knock down a person.
The secret of throwing a powerful jab, cross and hook is not hidden only in the upper part of the body. Indeed, all different muscles should move coherently like a machine to enhance the hit.
Actually, your back leg has to rotate while your arm is going forward. In this way, it helps your body to spin and speed up the punch.
An unexpected locat… owner of the location
Jackson trains his young guys in a gym in the heart of Philadelphia (PA, U.S.A.), called Balance Studios. This gym has a charity partnership with Focused Athletics and donates its space for free to the cause.
I thought it was a normal martial arts gym, but once I got inside, sbam! Ricardo Migliarese.
For those who don’t know who Ricardo Migliarese is, he is an American born professional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu grappler and a world and Pan-Am champion.
Of course I seized the moment to shoot a video also with him and it is in pipeline. Follow me on Facebook not to miss this update.
Non-profit to save millennials in Philly
Focused Athletics is a registered 501(c) non-profit organization which provides Philadelphia inner city teens academic, athletic and professional resources, such as resume building and SAT prep.
I support this wonderful initiative, because they provide the professionals and structures to help these kids get into university and stay out of trouble.
