Yearly Star Wars lightsaber battle in Washington Square Park: may the Force be with you!

Updated: Sep 27, 2018

It’s really true here, in New York City, the nightlife always surprises. I was hanging out in lower Manhattan when I reached Washington Square Park and…Boom! Lightsaber battle!

The yearly showdown

The Force is constantly searching for balance. Good and Evil, Jedi and Sith, have a year to rise an army and, when the time comes, meet each other in an epic battle.

Every year, hundreds of Star Wars fans, super-nerds and folks that love a good time, choose a faction and unsheathe their lightsaber.

There is no age limit, everybody can take part in the battle, and the rules are easy: get a lightsaber and don’t be hit. If you get hit once, you are dead.

About Newmindspace

The event is usually hosted by Newmindspace: a New York- and Toronto-based urban arts collective founded in 2005 by Lori Kufner and Kevin Bracken.

They organize free, monthly events in cities throughout North America. Their events have inspired other groups to undertake similar projects in cities all around the world.

May the Force be with you!
