Is yoga a sport only for women? This is a question that encouraged me to meet Alyssandra Docherty, a health and fitness coach, at the Race Street Pier (Philadelphia PA, U.S.A.) to find the answer. The city wakes up very early here in Philly: at 7 a.m. we were all ready with our yoga mats along the pier, just right down the Benjamin Franklin Bridge.
In this interview, Alyssandra shared with us some reasons why a man should do yoga. But as a man, I can say she maybe forgot to list one of the most important ones…you can meet a lot of girls! Not to mention the fact that doing yoga represents a good opportunity to meet other people with healthy habits in general.
The right mood to start the day
It’s well known people of success usually wake up very early in the morning. It’s hard, I know, but what if you are able to stand in front of an amazing sunrise, surrounded by the relaxing sound of waves, in one of the most suggestive spots of Philadelphia?
First of all, yoga is a discipline that stimulates our spiritual side, but to keep it effective, it should be practiced in the right places. Alyssandra has practiced yoga for over ten years and usually attends lessons organized by a group called "Yoga on the pier". This group follows the attentive instructions of Elise Bruhl, a yoga coach who teaches for passion and asks only optional donations to support this activity.
Race Street Pier is the perfect location for yoga, because you have trees and the green of a park, the soft sound of the river waves that crash on the pier and the amazing landscape of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge that reminds, somehow, like the Brooklyn bridge.
A sport that supports sports
Alyssandra explains yoga is mainly a discipline that provides physical and mental preparation for all sports. No matter what you do, the benefits in strength and elasticity are remarkable. You should do yoga during rest days, because it helps the muscles recover and keeps your blood flooding into them.
Breathing is also another fundamental element. Yoga teaches you to breath in and breath out properly, focusing on your inside and helping you to overcome the effort.
